5 Tips To Stay Focused While Working From Home

It seems pretty simple,  the modern day lifestyle of working from home or rather the privilege of tapping on the keys of your laptop in your pajamas.  Sometimes it may feel like a sleepover for one, or something like a pajama party for a professional lounging on the couch. No matter the anticipated savviness,  nor the dedication you so preserved to get a ton of work done before you started; sitting in the comfort of your own home and trying to work, may be a challenge.

With a job that allows you to roll over and lightly sprint from your bedroom to your office on a weekday to power on your comp; It takes a special kind of finesse to get some work done.  It takes some tools to cater to finalizing a project, and to focus on what needs to be completed with or without distractions.

I have conjured up 5 easy tips to help you stay focused on your journey of working from home. Try to stay focused while reading 😃

 1. HAVE A LIST OF TASKS FOR THE DAY

As a marketing and event manager, I have become like my grandmother, a borderline worry wart. I wake up in the middle of the night with work thoughts. What needs to be done...What needs to be reconfirmed...What needs to be reviewed, scheduled, supervised and discussed. It can sometimes become overwhelming.

So much so, I have to repeat the list of tasks in my mind, in hopes of remembering them as I awake in the morning. The best way to tackle what I call the "thought monster," is to make a list and tackle them one by one in order of priority. So plan ahead when you know you will be working from home.  Focus on those tasks for an hour or 2, THEN check your email. We all know how the email monster is.  It can change your whole planned process for the day.

Remember that whole priority concept, I mentioned? People talk about it all the time. It is truly imperative in tackling the infamous “thought monster.” Seriously ponder on what your priorities are.  What needs to be done TODAY!  Working in the world of events, tomorrow is nothing more than a blessing of more hours to handle additional tasks that seem to continue to build. Lean on that though.  Lean on the fact that some things can absolutely wait a few additional hours or even until tomorrow.

2. USE YOUR DISTRACTIONS AS A WAY TO PROMOTE YOUR WORK

Everyone is different in what they may need in making their work successful.  Some may need a quiet area, while others need music booming in the background.  Some need to follow feng shui in their office space or work area. Some are motivated by specific colors or by knowing your team is within arms reach. Some just need to kick back with their feet up, laptop in view and the television broadcasting their favorite program.

The point is, understand what YOU need, and provide that to yourself. I'm in need of a little bit of all those suggestions, and the bass booming in the background? It simmers my mind to be super productive!

I have learned too, through plenty of rushing mornings, taking a moment to reconnect (slight meditation) at the beginning of the day makes me even more successful for the work load ahead.  I make my caffeinated Yogi hot tea beverage, turn on some tunes and flip open that MacBook Pro to assist me in making amazingness happen.

The fun is in the surroundings and foundation. Ask yourself what YOU need to in your bird’s eye view to make you functional at home and even more effective. Select the space that makes you focus and make that space yours at home for hours of work.

3. REMEMBER THE PASSION!

I feel like in this day and age we have been graced with an understanding that passion for your job alleviates the immediate stressors - this is true.  When you know you enjoy what you are working towards,  there is a special feeling of wanting to work harder, longer and more.  Although it may not be necessary, during your off time, picking up your phone to check your email is natural.

Responding to a work related text on a holiday seems effortless.  It isn't work,  it is you being you!  Cherish that.  Relish in the choice. It’s not a requirement, it can be an essential want. As long as that desire isn’t reckless, progress is imminent.  Currently, if you are not in a passionate state - I would recommend getting to that point for sure!

Realize what is important to you and work for it. Dedicate yourself to improving and being cognizant of your actions as they leave a lasting impression of who you are, and in this case a direct reflection of your work ethic. When I'm at home working I treasure the opportunity. I grapple with the distractions at times (I’m human), but the realization of having a sense of freedom resonates beyond the distractions. Passion wins!

4. TAKE A BREAK!

Sure, you are working from home and sure you are expected to be at your absolute highest. The liberty of working from home allows you a moment to consider what encourages you to perform at your best.  In order to maintain the best that you have to offer,  take a break.

That may mean a quick workout, a brief nap,  doing some laundry,  or take a look at Family Feud for a quick laugh. All of this is proposed to change your mood. To refresh you.  Lunch time was created to take the time to eat, but mostly, to step away from the tasks at hand.  Just knowing you have an opportunity to getaway spawns for a new start after the break. Use a break to your advantage.

5. LASTLY, BE YOU!

This seems to be a promising tip. Being you, no matter what, emits an energy of truth. You may not be the person that can work from home,  so be honest in knowing you.  You may not really want to be in the office, but you know you excel there, so speak up!  You may be the type to excel and do exceptionally well in the home space,  showcase that.

Maybe you will have more of an opportunity to do so!  In all moments,  in all work spaces, change nothing but the way in which you do your work. Never change you! In doing so,  the likelihood of you being in a lucrative state, more content, and happy is multiplied. Who doesn't appreciate that?!
