At Social Scene we are fully committed to connecting people and believing this is the best way to better your life and the relationships around you, personal and professional. This past New Year’s we hosted a rooftop event called “New Heights.” It inspired us all to not create a New Year’s Resolution but commit to bettering ourselves and expand our current lifestyle, pushing ourselves to do more out of our comfort zone. I personally made the commitment to volunteer once each month and travel each month. I have completed five months and have to say this year has been my most inspiring and satisfying to date! 
Giving back has so many benefits and there are several organizations in the city where you can find activities going on even if your schedule is extremely busy. I have really enjoyed Chicago Cares (chicagocares.org). The flexibility and diversity of programs they host and support staff has allowed for me to volunteer at retirement homes, halfway houses and lower income areas in Chicago, teaching nutrition education.

In just five months, I have met a variety of people who are also volunteering, as well as made connections with the people we were supporting. I was thoroughly inspired when I signed up to participate on a Saturday morning NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, nfte.com) class. The kids I was introduced to were from all walks of life but had amazing ideas about new businesses to start, family remedies that they wanted to turn into consumer products, as well as the inspiration to be their own independent boss; these kids were just 15 and 16 years old! I have learned so much about myself in the process, to be more humble and grateful for my surroundings and the impact you can make on someone’s day, just by giving a couple hours of your time.

Traveling has always been a passion of mine, to see how other people are living and experiencing across the US and abroad. Our passion to grow Social Scene outside of Chicago was to fuel our love for travel. Every city we have expanded to and visited has its own unique identity. We truly believe that content is the driver behind building a relationship. Either creating content by experiencing a new city or meeting a new person, teaches you and allows for a more fulfilling life for yourself. So far this year, I have made trips to Mexico, back home to Fort Wayne and Michigan to visit a friend’s distillery and his new born baby, New York for a wedding and birthday, and Dublin for a bachelor party!
These trips have taught me to be more efficient with the work I need to do, communicate more proficiently to delegate responsibilities and be exposed to new experiences that continue to teach me ways to be a better and happier person. Also, by planning trips and volunteer on certain dates, it allows for me to be more structured for times I work out, meeting with friends and other organizations to involve myself. By doing more, you learn more and accomplish more, leading to a much more satisfying day and peace of mind.
We encourage everyone to experience more, through events, trips near and far, making time to reconnect with current friends as well as push yourself outside of your comfort zone and learn from people you cross paths with. All has lead, for us, to a more enriched life, peace of mind, and continuing education in a variety of different social experiences. Doing more, not less, opens you up to a more satisfying and disciplined day, week, month and year ahead! Start today, with a new initiative to expand your relationships, life lessons, senses and each day you push yourself, you will develop new skills and learn more about yourself for the path you wish to go in life.
