What is the National Retail Federation?
Before we disclose the survey results for the top trending Halloween costumes in stores around, let us introduce to you the survey makers.
The National Retail Federation or NRF, for short, is the world’s largest retail trade association, representing retailers from the United States and more than 45 countries.
According to WikiPedia, its members include department stores, specialty, discount, catalog, Internet, and independent retailers, chain restaurants, and grocery stores. Members also include businesses that provide goods and services to retailers, such as vendors and technology providers.

Their surveys shed light on consumer shopping trends — from how American consumers shop for the holidays to whether they’re visiting stores or shopping online. Their consumer research is considered independent, reliable, and reputable and is done in partnership with Prosper Insights & Analytics, a global authority in gathering market information on US and China consumers via curated insights and analytics.

NRF’s survey is divided into three categories: Top Trending Halloween Costumes Brought in Stores for kids, for adults, and for pets. Let’s start with the costumes for Kids.
Top Trending Halloween Costumes for Kids

If you are thinking of a costume for your little one, the survey says that the Top Trending Halloween Costumes most likely to be bought in a retail store for kids are superheroes, princesses, and animal costumes.
Consumer research proved that there are more than 3.7 million kids who plan to dress up as their favorite superhero or action character. 2.9 million children want to dress up as Batman characters, while another 2.9 million as their favorite princess. Another 2.2 million young ones will want to dress as an animal such as a cat, monkey or dog.
Other kids would also like to dress up as Spider Man, a Star Wars Character, a witch, a pirate, or as Wonder Woman.
Top Trending Halloween Costumes for Adults

If you think that Halloween isn’t just for kids, you are right! The survey reveals that 48% of adults plan to dress in costume for the festivities as a witch, Batman, animal, and pirate costumes are even the most likely picked costumes out from stores.
According to the data, more than 5.8 million adults plan to dress like a witch, 3.2 million as their favorite Batman character, 3 million as an animal (cat, dog, cow, etc.), and 2.8 million as a pirate.
Adults who love to dress up are also known to buy zombie, vampire, slasher villains (think Jason Vorhees, Freddy Krueger, etc..), Marvel Superheroes, and Wonder Woman. (Wow, Wonder Woman is a popular costume choice… I wonder… pun intended. 😄 )

Top Trending Halloween Costumes for Pets

And of course, for the pets. Our pets certainly won’t be left behind when it comes to celebrating and dressing up for Halloween. Pet parents often buy pumpkin, hot dog, or lion costumes.
Pet lovers will want to dress up their animal in a pumpkin costume (10 percent), while others will dress their feline or canine as a hot dog (7 percent) and the others as a dog, lion or pirate (4 percent). Other popular choices for pet costumes are bumblebee, devil, ghost, witch, and a Star Wars Character. Get ready to spy some pets dressed up in the neighborhood.
