Experience Tequila Like A Pro

Cheers taking a shot

A gathering of tequila connoisseurs is no wine tasting. If you have been regularly attending wine tasting events, you may not be able to use your skills when you enter a tequila tasting venue. To experience tequila like a pro is to know essential details about this flavorful mix.

Tequila 101

There is so much story behind that shot glass and tequila is a drink that has a lot to tell. It is categorized as a distilled spirit made from the fermented juice of Mexico’s agave plant. Agave is a cactus-like plant native in the region and the juice is cooked in a labor-intensive process to produce the drink that people around the world have come to love.

Tequila is also known as the first ever distilled drink in North America. It has been consumed since the 16th century during Spanish colonization. However, the roots of using agave to make a beverage can be traced back from the pre-colonization era with the Aztecs. The tribe experimented on distilling the plant to create a drink out of the fermented juice.

Today, tequila is regulated by the Official Mexican Standard. A drink will not be considered as such unless to contains at least 51 percent pure Blue Agave.

It’s All About The Flavor

This is not to say that other tasting events are not about the flavor, but tequila tasting focuses more on this important factor. It is all about the smallest yet most significant details. The goal is all about being subtle with the aroma and making the taste pop right within your palate.

Official Mexican Standard – Norma Oficial Mexicana in Spanish – categorizes tequila into five groups according to their age, color, and flavor. Let’s take a look:

  • Añejo, aged or vintage tequila. A drink aged for three years, it is notable for its amber color and smooth flavor. It is best consumed chilled like how brandy does the thing for you.
  • Blanco, Plata, or white-silver tequila. This is rather a younger tequila served with stronger flavors and are used perfectly for mixed beverages.
  • Extra Añejo or mature tequila. This is older than the regular Añejo as it has been aged for more than three years. Because of this, it has intricate flavors and is usually consumed like cognac.
  • Joven, Ora, or gold tequila. It is literally carrying that light gold hue but has smoother flavor, making it best for mixing with other drinks and shots.
  • Reposado, or rested tequila. This is the most popular type of the drink known for its smoother flavor than the rest. It is also used for mixed shots. (http://www.haciendatresrios.com/travel-tips/the-art-of-tequila-tasting)

During A Tequila Tasting Event

Taste the tequila cheers shot

The various steps through a tequila tasting event are generally similar to those intended for wine drinkers. Taking a shot of this beverage usually goes out as a casual challenge game among circles of friends, but tasting events are for those who wish to explore more.

There are special set of skills that you should develop when it comes to such events. Since tequila’s flavor usually fades when it is exposed with air, it is a drink consumed the moment it is served.

First, look at the color. This quality depends on the category of the drink enumerated earlier, but appreciate the hues as they tell a lot about the entire experience as you move along. Then, start turning the glass toward the side so the liquid gets closer to the rim as much as possible. Make little sniffs and beware of fully inhaling the aroma as this will affect its taste.

Move your nose over to the middle glass to enjoy its extra flavors of citrus, fruits or maybe even florals. The fun part is on the actual tasting where you need to inhale before taking a sip. Once the liquid goes in your mouth, remember to inhale only through the nose and begin to swallow. Right as you do it is only the moment that you can exhale on your tongue to further work on your buds.

The month of May is all about spring tequila tasting festivities. Embark on a journey to warm up your taste buds with a variety of tequilas in a two-hour tasting event hosted by Social Scene. Social Scene is a company that builds your events and your brands through experiential marketing.
