The 2018 Indianapolis I Heart Bourbon Tasting Festival has come to a close. Attendees truly tasted the love in this event hosted by Social Scene and RNDC at Blind Owl Brewery on Saturday, September 15th.
Social Scene owner and co-founder William Holdeman shares, “I Heart Bourbon had another successful year with a great group of people coming together for their love for Bourbon. Indianapolis showed us some amazing weather and thank you to Blind Owl Brewery for such a beautiful space.”
More than 30 bourbons went on display for the attendees to try. Indy locals enjoyed the fine tastes of several bourbons (10 tasting tickets and additional available for purchase with 100% going to charity), 1 full whiskey drink, giveaways and raffles, and entertainment!
They also got the chance to vote for their favorite brands. Out of the many bourbon brands that signed up for the event, only a few were chosen to be on top. Social Scene features them here.

Top Brands
1. Clyde May's
Born in Conecuh Ridge right at the height of the Prohibition Era in the 1920s, Clyde May as a brand defines “True Grit,” its official website says. The person from which the brand name comes from was raised during war times and May proudly served in the Army’s 77th Infantry Division during the second World War. This strength became the spirit and the image of this brand.
Clyde May’s product line-up includes:
- Alabama Style, aged 6 to 7 years in oak barrels and finished with a hint of apple. Great over ice but a solid choice for mixing a cocktail.
- Special Reserve, a select reserve of our special stock aged 6 to 7 years in 53 gallon char #4 barrels and finished during bottling with a natural essence of apple
- Cask Strength, currently aged 8, 9 and 10 years, all finished with a kiss of apple. Bottled at cask strength with a nose full of citrus, peach and cedar to deliver a rich spice, apple and oak

Award-winning bourbon from David Nicholson
2. David Nicholson Bourbon
David Nicholson is a brand born in the private back room of a grocery store in St. Louis, Missouri. The brand name comes from the name of the store owner who created the original bourbon recipe. Until this recipe was passed on to several generations since then, spanning to almost two centuries.
It has the following recipes:
- David Nicholson 1843 - “Wheated” bourbon that offers a distinctively smooth flavor and finish
- David Nicholson Reserve - “Ryed” bourbon extra-aged that provides flavor that is distinctively spicy to the taste, with hints of honey and vanilla.

3. Hotel Tango Bravo Bourbon
Hotel Tango is a whiskey distillery in Indianapolis that produces beverages well-loved by attendees at Social Scene’s 2018 Indianapolis I Heart Bourbon Tasting Festival. Travis Barnes, the founder of Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery, is more than just the man behind the handcrafted spirits that he creates. He is a war veteran who fought in a war in the Middle East. He found a set of friends who soon became the foundation of the whiskey that kept tasting participants coming back for more.
The event’s highlight, Bravo Bourbon, is made with choice wheat and corn and offers tasting notes of butter, toasted almond, subtle oak, and spices.
Rabbit Hole PX Sherry Finish has various flavors that are tasteful
4. Rabbit Hole PX Sherry Finish
Rabbit Hole PX (Pedro Ximenez) Sherry Finish is characterized by its amber, reddened appearance with aroma that traces hints from wine and raisins with musty wood. There are also flavors of caramel alongside the sweetness of cherry.
“The flavor is like a three-fingered pinch of trail mix that brought up lots of raisins, dried cherries and dried currants, but only a couple of shavings of roasted almonds. As on the nose, there is a thick and dominant Sherry influence that elbows aside the native Bourbon flavors, leaving just a note of vanilla,” Whiskey Reviewer points out in their article.
The 2018 Indianapolis I Heart Bourbon Tasting Festival indeed took bourbon lovers to a whole new level of experience.
Holdeman adds, “We love partnering with RNDC on this event each year as it brings people together to learn more about Bourbon and all for a great cause. Their team and represented brands are always full of knowledge to share with attendees. We hope to see everyone out again next year!”
